How to be Safe Riding Motorcycles

Many people love riding motorcycles saying there is nothing better than the open road on a motorcycle and the feeling of freedom it brings with it and the number of riders has almost doubled over ten years to now over seven million.

However, motorcycle riding is undeniably dangerous with motorcyclists more than 35 times more likely to be killed on the road than those in cars, vans or trucks.

One of the reasons so many motorcyclist are involved in accidents with other vehicles is because the other drivers on the road do not see them. They can often be in the vehicle’s blind spot or the vehicle drivers can be distracted. Therefore it is very important for motorcyclists to make themselves as visible as possible using neon colored clothing and reflective strips. They may not be as trendy as the traditional black leather jacket but they do contribute significantly to safety.

What to Keep in Your Car for Winter

As winter begins you should make sure that you never leave home in your vehicle without ensuring that you are fully prepared.

Before you leave make sure that you check the weather forecast and if it looks bad then stay at home unless it is really important that you make that journey.

Not only should you ensure that the car is mechanically prepared for winter, but also you need to have a winter weather kit in your trunk. Firstly you will need a shovel, in case you ever get stuck in the snow, and make sure you have water and snacks in case you are snowed in, in your car, and a thermos of hot soup. Should you be travelling with a pet, have a little bowl for them so that they can eat and drink as well.

Whilst you are stocking the trunk, take the time to check on the spare tire and the jack, and make sure that the first aid kit is properly stocked. You should have a blanket and a flashlight with spare batteries and think about having jumper cables as many batteries run down when people leave their heat running when stuck in the snow.

Finally,  you need a windshield scraper and the all important cell phone. Making sure you are prepared will make it much easier if ever you are stranded because of winter weather.

Special Items for a Vehicle First Aid Kit

When putting together a First Aid kit for a vehicle you do not only need the disposable medical items such as bandages and a selection of medications. There are also other items which can be very useful in the event of an accident or emergency when you are on the road.

Obviously a cell phone can be invaluable but ensure that it has a dashboard recharger. Also you need to keep a note of emergency numbers and contact information for your family doctor and pediatrician, for your roadside emergency service and the poison control center.

You should carry a small, waterproof flashlight with extra batteries and candles and matches in case you are our overnight and need to start a fire and candles for light. Still thinking of overnight, or if stranded in the snow or if someone is injured, it is useful to keep a Mylar emergency blanket in your car.

Sunscreen and insect repellent plus insect spray are worth having in the vehicle too, in case you need to hike for help.

You  should check your first-aid kit regularly, at least every three months, to be sure the flashlight batteries work and to replace supplies that have past their expiration date or to replace those that have been used.

Teens Warned to Drive Safely

With school about to begin, local Las Vegas law enforcement officers are reminding those students who have just obtained their driver’s license to be safe.

Teresa Brandise, lost her daughter, Olivia, six years ago when she was a passenger in a car that lost control near Seven Hills being driven by a young driver. She says that  parents that are also responsible for teaching their children about driving safely and senior Ryan Everson admits that  drivers his age do take risks such as partying in the car, texting and using their cell phones while driving and even using social media.

His claims are backed up by the accident statistics and according to Erin Breen of UNLV Safe Community Partnership, in 2012 teen drivers accounted for more than 7,000 accidents in the Las Vegas area and five of them died.

However, she goes on to say that things are improving, as nowadays teens are less likely to drink and drive, and more likely to buckle up. Free programs such as Drivers Edge out at Las Vegas Motor Speedway teach teens defense driving skills. In time, authorities hope that diver safety in the area will significantly improve.

Seat Belts for Children

Because children have a different skeletal structure they should not be considered in the same way as adults when wearing a seatbelt  and their age, height and weight should all be taken into consideration. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, these are the ways you should choose the right seat belt for your child.

Children under age 1 and those who weigh less than 20 pounds should sit in rear-facing, child safety seats in the backseat of the car.

Children older than 1 who weigh more than 20 pounds should ride in forward-facing child safety seats again placed in the rear of the vehicle.  Typically, a child will outgrow a safety seat around age 4 and once she reaches about 40 pounds.

Children age 4 and older, who weigh more than 40 pounds should ride in booster seats and then can  safely progress to a seat belt when the belt fits properly across the upper thighs and chest which is usually at age 8 or when they are at least 4 feet 9 inches tall. However they should still sit in the backseat of the car until they are at least 13 years old.

We encourage Henderson area parents to always thing of the welfare of their children and ensure that they buckle up properly. Henderson Police Initiate Crosswalk Crackdown

The Henderson Police Department recently launched a three week campaign to crack down on drivers and pedestrians who do not obey crosswalk laws.  During the campaign city traffic officials will be on the lookout for both drivers who do not respect pedestrians in the crosswalk, and also pedestrians who do not cross roads in the designated crosswalk areas.  The program is expected to run through mid-May and will involve officers from departments of surrounding jurisdictions which are taking part of the Joining Forces program.

According to Nevada state law drivers must always yield the right of way to pedestrians in a crosswalk area, and stop in time to allow the drivers of other vehicles to see the crossing pedestrians.  For this reason it is always advisable to stop behind any vehicle which comes to a stop at a crosswalk, and is never a good idea to attempt to pass such a vehicle.

In areas where a crosswalk is clearly marked, pedestrians are advised to only cross the roads in those areas.  They are also advised to pause the use of their electronic devices while crossing the road, and to never assume that a driver will stop simply because a pedestrian is in the designated crosswalk area.

The crackdown comes as a result of a total of 51 pedestrian deaths in Clark County in 2013, and 71 across the entire state of Nevada.  The Henderson Police Department reportedly received a federal grant of $188,000 through the Joining Forces program, which aims to reduce deaths and injuries on the nation’s roadways.
