Premature Alcohol Related Deaths at Over 80,000 Per Year

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released a new study showing the effect of drinking alcohol on the population.

The research shows that between 2006 and 2010, one in 10 deaths of adults between 20 and 64 was due to drinking too much alcohol. ‘Too much’ is defined as fifteen or more drinks a week for men and eight or over for women.

The study states that drinking too much alcohol claimed the lives of 88,000 adults in the U.S. making the abuse of alcohol the third highest cause of preventable death.

The highest number of alcohol related deaths was in New Mexico with 51 deaths per 100,000 people, and New Jersey had the lowest number with 19.1 deaths per 100,000 people.

According to the study, 2.5 million years of potential lives are lost merely due to the abuse of alcohol.
