Premature Alcohol Related Deaths at Over 80,000 Per Year

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released a new study showing the effect of drinking alcohol on the population.

The research shows that between 2006 and 2010, one in 10 deaths of adults between 20 and 64 was due to drinking too much alcohol. ‘Too much’ is defined as fifteen or more drinks a week for men and eight or over for women.

The study states that drinking too much alcohol claimed the lives of 88,000 adults in the U.S. making the abuse of alcohol the third highest cause of preventable death.

The highest number of alcohol related deaths was in New Mexico with 51 deaths per 100,000 people, and New Jersey had the lowest number with 19.1 deaths per 100,000 people.

According to the study, 2.5 million years of potential lives are lost merely due to the abuse of alcohol.

Feds Note Increase in Drugged Driving

Federal, state, and local authorities are worried that the liberalization of marijuana laws across the country will have a negative effect on the nation’s young drivers. In particular, authorities worry that younger drivers are particularly susceptible to driving under the influence of marijuana, and becoming involved in serious car accidents as a result.

One study backing up the concern is a recent study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration which indicates that one out of eight high school seniors admits to having driven after smoking marijuana. Though this statistic does not necessarily indicate these teens’ likelihood of becoming involved in an automobile accident, the study does also indicate that one out of four fatal drugged driving accidents involves a driver under the age of 25.

In order to combat these sobering statistics parents should do more to not only inform their children of the risks involved with drug use, but particularly the risks involved with using drugs and then getting behind the wheel of a car. According to a Columbia University study, incidences of fatalities involving drugged driving accidents have risen over the past decade, showing that using drugs and then operating a motor vehicle is an extremely dangerous activity.

Texting and Driving Becoming an Ever-Increasing Problem Among Teens

According to a recent study conducted by the government on teenage behavior in the United States, texting while driving is still a problem among individuals in that age group and the problem isn’t getting any better. While other worrisome behaviors have seen a decrease in frequency among teens, texting while driving has been on the rise despite the reports of serious injuries and deaths and national ad campaigns intended to educate teens (and others) about the dangers of such behavior.

The government began doing a study of worrisome behavior among teens back in 1991 and has been conducting the study every two years. It has found that while teens are wearing bike helmets and seat belts more frequently they are texting more often when they’re behind the wheel. Spokepersons at the Center for Disease Control, which oversees the study, reported that generally speaking, teenagers have more healthy behavior than was exhibited by teens two decades ago.

41 percent of teenage drivers reported having texted or emailed while driving during the previous month. 37 states were surveyed in this latest study, with the lowest numbers of texting-while-driving teens (32%) found in Massachusetts and the highest number (61%) found in South Dakota.

Bone Fractures and Witness Testimony -video-

When too high a load is placed on the human body it can result in a fracture of one or more bones. As such, all bone fractures are the result of the bone’s the inability to withstand the strain under which it is placed. But, despite the fact that all fractures are the result of this common cause, not all fractures are created equal. Due to differing ways loads may be placed on a bone, different fracture patterns have been classified by professionals.

This video explains different kinds of fractures which may result from an accident:

Medical professionals are able to examine bone fractures and compare them to testimony given by witnesses to a particular accident. They are then able to perform an analysis and determine whether or not the witness testimony is in line with the physical evidence. These biomechanical analyses are extremely helpful forensic investigations which are practically incontrovertible when helping to establish the facts of an accident.

Often times suing for a major auto accident can involve very detailed forensic analyses such as accident reconstructions and medical examinations. This is one of the primary reasons why Henderson residents who have been involved in major automobile accidents should always choose to work with a law firm which has the expertise and resources available to conduct a thorough investigation, and present a trump tight case.

Memorial Day Festivities Punctuated by Numerous Serious Accidents

Every year Nevada residents take to local area lakes and other bodies of water to celebrate the Memorial Day holiday with various festivities. Sadly, it is not uncommon for these festivities to end in injury, especially in boating and water related accidents. This year saw multiple accidents, including one which severely injured a young boy as he nearly drowned.

At about 2:20 PM authorities with the Lake Mead National Recreation Area Interagency Communication Center received a call indicating that a young boy had nearly drowned. The incident is currently under investigations and authorities have not yet stated the conditions under which the boy nearly lost his life. But the 12 year-old boy’s near drowning was not the only emergency responded to on May 18.

A five year-old girl nearly drowned at Special Events Beach in the hours before the 12 year-old’s near drowning, in a day which saw park rangers respond to 15 different support calls. The calls included near drownings, other medical emergencies, and disabled vehicles. Perhaps playing a role was local weather, with winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour during the times of the incidents. Additionally, both minors were said to not have been wearing life jackets at the times of their accidents.

Choosing a Bicycle Helmet to Safely Enjoy Bicycling in Henderson

Every year hundreds of bicycle riders are injured and killed on U.S. roads. In 2011 there were over 700 bicyclists killed in the nation, while there were over 48,000 injured. Many of these injuries occurred on Henderson roads. There are many precautions bicycle riders can take to help ensure that they will have the maximum chance of safely enjoying their bike riding experiences. But, in real life, things may go wrong. Though no one takes to the roads on a bicycle with the intention of falling or getting into an accident, these kinds of possibilities do happen. For this reason, it is recommended that bicyclists, both child and adult, always wear a bicycle helmet when on Henderson roads.

Purchasing a bicycle helmet can be a pleasurable experience which reaffirms your commitment to bicycle safety. But, every helmet is not made for everyone. It is important that you properly choose a bike helmet which is right for you. Take a look at the following video for some pointers which will help you properly fit a bike helmet.

Of the many fatal bicycle accidents which occur on Henderson roads, and roads across the nation, many are preventable. Drivers sharing the roads with bicyclists should remember to be respectful of them, and share the roads. If you or someone you know have been injured or killed in a bicycle accident, call the Henderson accident attorneys of Jolley Urga Woodbury & Little at (702) 699-7500 right away or contact us online, for a free consultation.

How to Control Your Motorcycle at Low Speeds -video-

Everyone knows that traveling on a motorcycle at extremely high rates of speed can significantly increase the dangers involved the practice. The faster a motorcycle rider goes, the less time he or she has to make adjustments to changing conditions on the road. But what many people may not realize is that bike riders also experience difficulties when riding and low rates of speed. This is because the forces which help to keep the motorcycle upright at high rates of speed are less effective when bike riders travel at low velocities. Here we will take a look at some tips for staying safe on Henderson roads while riding motorcycles and low rates of speed.

Motorcycle accidents have a particularly gruesome effect on victims. Of all traffic fatalities, motorcycle riders consist of a far higher percentage than would be indicated by their proportion of overall drivers. We encourage Henderson motorcycle riders to exercise the utmost caution when riding on Henderson roads. If you or someone you know have been injured or killed in a motorcycle accident, call the Henderson accident attorneys of Jolley Urga Woodbury & Little at (702) 699-7500 right away or contact us online, for a free consultation.

Henderson Woman Dies After Being Struck By Car

Police are investigating the death of a Henderson woman after she was killed while trying to cross a street in the city.

39 year-old Yvonne Harris was crossing the intersection at East Lake Mead Parkway on Saturday night when she was struck and killed by a car. The driver of the car, 27-year-old Martel Cage, is said to be cooperating with police and has submitted to drug and alcohol tests, as police attempt to determine whether he was under the influence at the time of the accident.

According to witnesses on the scene, Harris was crossing the road against the crosswalk signals, which at the time indicated that it was unsafe to cross. After being struck, Harris was taken to a local hospital, but died of her injuries Saturday night.

This tragic story repeats itself all too often on streets and roads in Nevada and across the country. We would like to encourage all Henderson residents to take the utmost care when crossing the city’s roads. When possible, always cross in the crosswalk and be doubly vigilant for any cars which may be in the vicinity.

GM Recall Woes Cause the Company’s Profits to Fall Dramatically

General Motors’ profits are down approximately 85% in the wake of a devastating scandal involving the company’s failure to recall defective vehicles.

For over a decade General Motors has been aware that millions of cars it manufactured suffered from  serious defects which caused them to spontaneously lose power while in operation.  Despite being notified that the defect was causing auto accidents, including accidents which caused fatalities, General Motors nevertheless failed to recall the vehicles for over a decade.  The scandal finally came to light in early 2014, prompting the company to recall millions of vehicles and attempt to assure the public that it would do all it could to regain their trust.  In disturbing twist, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration was also aware of the deadly defect, and also failed to take appropriate action.

Toyota recently reached a $1.4 billion settlement with the government as a result of its having failed to recall defective vehicles.  It will be interesting to see what kinds of sanctions General Motors faces in light of the fact that the government itself also failed in its duty to protect the consumer.

Henderson Police Initiate Crosswalk Crackdown

The Henderson Police Department recently launched a three week campaign to crack down on drivers and pedestrians who do not obey crosswalk laws.  During the campaign city traffic officials will be on the lookout for both drivers who do not respect pedestrians in the crosswalk, and also pedestrians who do not cross roads in the designated crosswalk areas.  The program is expected to run through mid-May and will involve officers from departments of surrounding jurisdictions which are taking part of the Joining Forces program.

According to Nevada state law drivers must always yield the right of way to pedestrians in a crosswalk area, and stop in time to allow the drivers of other vehicles to see the crossing pedestrians.  For this reason it is always advisable to stop behind any vehicle which comes to a stop at a crosswalk, and is never a good idea to attempt to pass such a vehicle.

In areas where a crosswalk is clearly marked, pedestrians are advised to only cross the roads in those areas.  They are also advised to pause the use of their electronic devices while crossing the road, and to never assume that a driver will stop simply because a pedestrian is in the designated crosswalk area.

The crackdown comes as a result of a total of 51 pedestrian deaths in Clark County in 2013, and 71 across the entire state of Nevada.  The Henderson Police Department reportedly received a federal grant of $188,000 through the Joining Forces program, which aims to reduce deaths and injuries on the nation’s roadways.
