How to be Safe Riding Motorcycles

Many people love riding motorcycles saying there is nothing better than the open road on a motorcycle and the feeling of freedom it brings with it and the number of riders has almost doubled over ten years to now over seven million.

However, motorcycle riding is undeniably dangerous with motorcyclists more than 35 times more likely to be killed on the road than those in cars, vans or trucks.

One of the reasons so many motorcyclist are involved in accidents with other vehicles is because the other drivers on the road do not see them. They can often be in the vehicle’s blind spot or the vehicle drivers can be distracted. Therefore it is very important for motorcyclists to make themselves as visible as possible using neon colored clothing and reflective strips. They may not be as trendy as the traditional black leather jacket but they do contribute significantly to safety.

Distracted Driving

One of the major problems on roads across the United States is distracted driving and many people believe that the problem is becoming worse.

According to federal estimates, distracted driving is partly or wholly responsible for 16% of all fatal crashes and around 5,000 deaths a year.

Distraction can take many forms, whether it is texting or calling on a cell phone, sending emails, downloading music or changing a CD. The latest research shows that each distraction lasts around 27 seconds which is a long enough time period for an accident to occur.

Those who are most frequently distracted are teens and studies have shown that they are distracted for around a quarter of the time that they are driving. Most of the time it is due to the use of electronic devices but it can also be due to eating or the use of in car technology or simply talking to a passenger.

Even those who text while stopped at a traffic light can still cause distraction once the driver starts to move again as he or she is often not concentrating fully on the road ahead.

Woman Responsible for Death of a Child gets Probation

On Wednesday, September 9, a woman driver responsible for the death of a child was given probation.

The accident happened in July 2014, when 23 year old Wendy Carrion was driving north on Interstate 15 with six children in her SUV. According to Nevada Highway Patrol she lost control and it rolled. Three of the children, girls aged 4, 6 and 9 were ejected as at least two were not wearing seat belts. Nine year old Gabriela who was her niece, died of her injuries at University Medical Center. Carrion and the rest of the children were treated at hospital and then released.

The NHP said that the vehicle was not equipped for six children and on that day, Carrion had her four children along with two of her sister’s in the car. The youngest four were in car seats but there was no other way of restraining the elder two.

Carrion, a single mother with no criminal history, pleaded guilty in May to one felony count of reckless driving. However she did not have a valid driver’s license as she was convicted in 2013 in North Las Vegas of driving without a license and not properly restraining a child in a vehicle.

Having received the support of her sister, the mother of the dead child, she was ordered to serve six months of house arrest, followed by up to five years of probation. The judge also ordered her to attend an adult education program and not drive without a license.
