Woman Responsible for Death of a Child gets Probation

On Wednesday, September 9, a woman driver responsible for the death of a child was given probation.

The accident happened in July 2014, when 23 year old Wendy Carrion was driving north on Interstate 15 with six children in her SUV. According to Nevada Highway Patrol she lost control and it rolled. Three of the children, girls aged 4, 6 and 9 were ejected as at least two were not wearing seat belts. Nine year old Gabriela who was her niece, died of her injuries at University Medical Center. Carrion and the rest of the children were treated at hospital and then released.

The NHP said that the vehicle was not equipped for six children and on that day, Carrion had her four children along with two of her sister’s in the car. The youngest four were in car seats but there was no other way of restraining the elder two.

Carrion, a single mother with no criminal history, pleaded guilty in May to one felony count of reckless driving. However she did not have a valid driver’s license as she was convicted in 2013 in North Las Vegas of driving without a license and not properly restraining a child in a vehicle.

Having received the support of her sister, the mother of the dead child, she was ordered to serve six months of house arrest, followed by up to five years of probation. The judge also ordered her to attend an adult education program and not drive without a license.
