With school about to begin, local Las Vegas law enforcement officers are reminding those students who have just obtained their driver’s license to be safe.
Teresa Brandise, lost her daughter, Olivia, six years ago when she was a passenger in a car that lost control near Seven Hills being driven by a young driver. She says that parents that are also responsible for teaching their children about driving safely and senior Ryan Everson admits that drivers his age do take risks such as partying in the car, texting and using their cell phones while driving and even using social media.
His claims are backed up by the accident statistics and according to Erin Breen of UNLV Safe Community Partnership, in 2012 teen drivers accounted for more than 7,000 accidents in the Las Vegas area and five of them died.
However, she goes on to say that things are improving, as nowadays teens are less likely to drink and drive, and more likely to buckle up. Free programs such as Drivers Edge out at Las Vegas Motor Speedway teach teens defense driving skills. In time, authorities hope that diver safety in the area will significantly improve.
