On Tuesday a group of traffic safety experts met in order to discuss ways of how to make Las Vegas safer.
The group of around 30 police, civil engineers and community members made up the Southern Nevada Traffic Safety Committee which meets four times a year to brainstorm ideas on how to improve traffic safety in the area and cut down on accidents.
At this latest meeting, Senator Mark Manedo said that he is planning to introduce a bill which will impose greater penalties of two to 20 years behind bars for those who leave the site of an accident, as they have been drinking and do not want to face a DUI charge. The current penalty is only up to six months.
Community members said that they would like to see more visible signs at bus stops which would tell people to watch for traffic and use crosswalks.
The group is aiming for there to be fewer road deaths by the use of education which will encourage people to use crosswalks and wear seatbelts.
Last year, in the Metro area, traffic fatalities were down 11 percent but there was an increase in fatalities among those not wearing seat belts of 12 percent over 2013. Pedestrian deaths were down by 28 percent.
